Many people hunt out ways of losing weight. They seek answers in the gym, on the treadmill, in the swimming pool or on the bike. This is no surprise — every year the percentage of people in the Western world considered to be ‘obese’ grows — we are simply getting fatter.

Which means that people want to lose weight. But finding a method of doing so that work is hard. There are plenty of ‘miracle cures’ that don’t work, and plenty of exercises that are very difficult and require a certain level of skill and fitness already.

So where should one turn?

One aspect that many people over look is how simply walking can help you lose a lot of weight.

If you are really looking to lose weight and want a low impact exercise then walking could well be what you need. Many people are unaware of just how powerful walking for weight loss really is. For instance did you know that you burn more calories walking a distance than you do running it?

This is coupled with the ability of simply doing a brisk walk to boost your metabolism. A boosted metabolism means that you burn through calories even when you are not exercising — so walking just before a meal will mean that you then burn off more of the calories from it than if you didn’t walk.

And added bonus is that we all know how to work — there is no learning complex weight machines or swimming strokes. And no expensive equipment!

There are many ways of making walking enjoyable as well — more so than simply spending time in a gym. You could consider such aspects as

· Walking a pet (their energy can brush off on you)

· Going window shopping (yes, walking around the shops counts, provided you don’t keep stopping!)

· Going for a walk in the countryside (beautiful scenery)

· Walking on the beach (walking on sand burns even more calories)

· Walking with a friend (great company makes the time fly by)
